Hopkins Costa Rica: Spanish Language, Culture, & Practicum

Costa Rica - Scarlet Macaw

This exciting new Hopkins summer study abroad program is offered by the Spanish department in order to provide a way for Spanish speakers to improve their Spanish language skills and volunteer in the community. Students will have class Monday through Friday mornings, volunteer work three afternoons a week, participate in cultural activities and field trips two afternoons a week, as well as embark on excursions throughout the country on the weekends for a total of 6 credits.

Only 11 km/7 miles north east of San José and situated on the outskirts of Braulio Carrillo National Park lies the charming town Coronado with the magnificent Neo-Gothic style church, numerous restaurants, cafes and markets.

Courses and Credits

6 graded JHU credits
The Hopkins Summer Program in Costa Rica offers three courses. Students will receive credit for 2 out of the 3 following courses:Costa Rica - Cloud Forest

Spanish Language (3 H credits): Depending on the student's level, students may earn credits for Intermediate I, Intermediate II, Advanced I, Advanced II, Advanced Spanish Composition, Advanced Spanish Conversation, Medical Spanish, or Spanish for International Relations.

Modern Latin American Culture (3 H credits): This course replaces the AS.211.380 Modern Latin American Culture course offered at JHU. It includes field trips and cultural activities within Costa Rica. Field trips and cultural activities will take place two afternoons a week and on weekends. Students who have already taken this course at JHU should enroll in the next course.

Community Based Learning - Spanish Language Practicum (3 H credits): Students will spend the afternoons Monday through Wednesday volunteering in the local community. Transportation will be provided to the volunteer projects. This course will satisfy the Spanish Language Practicum requirement for the Spanish for the Professions minor. Sample volunteer opportunities include preparing educational rehabilitation information at a drug addiction recovery center and providing health information and academic support to children at a local orphanage.

TBD. The program cost will be billed to the JHU student account and includes housing, international health insurance, all meals, excursions, and local transportation.

Housing

Students will be placed with carefully selected host families to be able to practice their language skills and learn firsthand about Spanish culture. 2 students will be placed with each host family in double bedrooms. 3 meals a day and internet access are included.
