The University of Tokyo was established in 1877 as the first national university in Japan. As a leading research university, UTokyo offers courses in essentially all academic disciplines at both undergraduate and graduate levels and conducts research across the full spectrum of academic activity.
The University aims to provide its students with a rich and varied academic environment that ensures opportunities for both intellectual development and the acquisition of professional knowledge and skills. The University-wide Student Exchange Program (USTEP) offers undergraduate students the opportunity to study Japanese language and take courses in English in the Faculties of UTokyo.
Students will be participating on the USTEP Type U program at the University of Tokyo for exchange students and will be eligible to take courses in English and/or Japanese with appropriate language skills in the various Faculties at the University of Tokyo.
Students will take Japanese language at the appropriate proficiency level. Students may take coursework in English focusing on the politics, economics, culture and society of Japan as part of the Global Japan Studies program. Students can also take regular courses open to Type-U students at the University of Tokyo offered in English and/or Japanese if they have the appropriate language skills.
Exchange students may apply for University housing arranged by UTokyo. However, due to the limited number of facilities available, we cannot guarantee that all students who apply for University-managed housing will receive it. The USTEP Office at UTokyo will contact the students with details of the procedure after their applications to study or research at UTokyo have been approved. Further information about university housing can be found here.
