Intern Abroad in Costa Rica - Atenas

Why Costa Rica?
Costa Rica is an ideal location for interns who want to gain experience in their field, improve their Spanish language skills, and immerse themselves in a friendly and welcoming culture. With a thriving economy and an international reputation as a premier eco-tourism destination, Costa Rica offers interns the best of both worlds. Participants have the opportunity to be placed in a challenging internship at a local or international organization, and experience the lush tropical beauty and culture of this Central American gem. World Endeavors’ base in Costa Rica, the town of Atenas, offers proximity to the capital of San Jose, while still immersing participants in a tight-knit Costa Rican community.

Interns can expect to work side by side with local colleagues, receive direction from a manager or staff member, and behave just as one would in a real job. On weekends or after work hours, interns engage in a host of activities depending on each participant’s tastes. Interns share meals with new friends or host family members, take in cultural events, explore the city, or even take day or weekend trips outside of the area. World Endeavors provides a list of possible activities in the area and the World Endeavors local coordinator can also function as an ever present guide and ambassador to the area.

Program Information**

Live in Atenas, Cost Rica
Costa Rica is known for its beautiful tropical landscape, and Atenas has received the honor of having the best climate in the world. With warm, sunny weather, and equally warm local people, it is an ideal location for interns year-round.

Atenas is a charming and relatively compact town. The area is known for agriculture, and the town is surrounded by plantations and the rich lush landscape that characterizes Costa Rica. The city has everything an intern needs including fitness centers, tennis courts, restaurants, banks, parks, shops, bars, and cafes. Local residents are incredibly warm and welcoming, and are always willing to help visitors with their Spanish and show them around their home town.

Program Snapshot

Language Training: World Endeavors’ Internship in Costa Rica program includes 15 hours of small-group language training during the first two weeks of the program. Interns take 90 minutes of Spanish language classes each day, with instruction ranging from beginning through advanced.

Housing : World Endeavors Costa Rica interns live with local host families in Atenas. Interns will have either single or shared rooms and shared bathrooms. They will enjoy home cooked Costa Rican food with their host families. Interns in certain fields such as environmental conservation may live in shared accommodations or lodges onsite at their project, depending on location.

Dates: Internships are available year round, and each placement is customized for the participant. This means that World Endeavors interns can choose the start date and duration of their internship, as well as the field. Due to holidays, traditional vacation schedules, and seasonal work availability, there might be better times than others to intern in a specific location or in a specific field. Our advisors work with interns to ensure that their time frame works adequately with the internship site. This communication is a key to creating a successful internship placement.

Duration: The minimum program duration for interning in Costa Rica is 2 months. Contact World Endeavors if you would like to go for a shorter duration.

Cost: See our website for program fee information
