Announcements : Hopkins Intersession Florence & Bologna Info Session

This program will provide an introduction to the Italian Renaissance in its polycentric dimensions from the 1300s to the 1600s. The course is divided into two sections.

In the first half, we will be based in Florence, exploring its churches, palaces, and museums, encountering works of art by Michelangelo, Leonardo, and Botticelli and discussing the civic and mercantile culture that shaped Florence.

In the second half, we will move to nearby Bologna, a city that houses one of the world's oldest universities, and that saw Republican and princely phases of rule. From Bologna, we will explore the artistic life of court cities such as Ferrara, Mantua, and Parma, each of which developed its own distinct Renaissance culture. The contrasts, contacts, and similarities between these worlds are one of the animating ideas of the course.
