Make a difference in children's lives while learning about the history and culture of the gorgeous volcanic archipelago of Cape Verde, off the West Coast of Africa.

Hopkins Intersession Cape Verde:
Service Learning & Luso-African Society

Cape Verde - Painting DC

This intersession program will offer students the opportunity to conduct service learning at an NGO in Cape Verde. JHU students will assist local children with literacy, sports, arts, technology, languages, music, social activities, and more. Students will have several lectures related to Cape Verde's culture, history, politics, environment, economy, course-related field trips, and other cultural activities to provide the opportunity for students to deepen understanding of this Luso-African society.Cape Verde - VolunteerThe program will start on campus in late October with a 1-credit course that meets weekly for the last six weeks of the semester. This course will provide students with some background knowledge about Cape Verde, Portuguese language foundations, and the NGO as well as prepare students for the service learning and cross-cultural experiences.

Courses and Credits

Students will earn 3 graded Humanities (H) credits for the course:
Service Learning & Luso-African SocietyCape Verde - Applying 1st Aid

The course will be taught by Dr. Flavia De Azeredo-Cerqueira, Portuguese Language Program Director and Lecturer in Portuguese. She has previously led intersession and summer courses in Brazil.

$5,400. The program cost will be billed to the JHU student account and includes airfare, housing, some meals, excursions, and international health insurance.

Students will be housed in shared rooms with another program participant. Facilities include air conditioning, single beds, a private en suite bathroom with hot and cold water, and internet. Students will be able to hire laundry service for a small fee. Daily breakfast is included.
