The Consortium for Advanced Studies Abroad (CASA)

Barcelona - Diez, Sofia
The Consortium for Advanced Studies Abroad program in Barcelona, Spain (CASA Barcelona) program offers a full-immersion learning experience in one of the leading cities of the world. This program is designed for students in all disciplines with advanced Spanish and/or Catalan skills. Students are immersed in the local university environment and take most of their courses at one or more of Brown's partner universities: the Universitat de Barcelona (UB), the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB), the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC), and the Universitat Pompeu Fabra (UPF).

Courses and Credits

The typical course load each semester consists of three university courses plus one course offered by CASA. CASA partners with four distinguished universities whose combined course offerings provide students with an array of opportunities in the humanities, social sciences, physical and natural sciences, art and architecture, and business. All courses are taught in Spanish. Students can choose courses at one or more of the following universities in Barcelona:

  • Universitat Polytecnica de Catalunya
  • Universitat Pompeu Fabra (Fall/Full Year only)

Research Opportunity
Every five years, CASA proposes to carry out a themed research project whose focus strongly resonates across each of the Divisional Center locations. The theme for 2018-2023 is Historical Memory.

Cost

Students will be charged are charged the cost of their program as established by the program and a study abroad and registration fee equivalent to 12% of Johns Hopkins tuition. Fees will be posted to students’ Hopkins SIS accounts by the Student Accounts Office. Financial aid may be applied toward the cost of the program.

Housing

Residencia Melon-District Marina has 427 individual rooms that cater to a mixed Spanish and international student population. CASA students have an individual room with a private bath. The single rooms open up to a common living room and kitchens that CASA students share with 8-9 flat mates (Spanish or other international students), creating an apartment like atmosphere. The residence is beside the "Marina" metro station and the tramway line, 10 minutes from UPF and the city downtown.
